The current demographic changes in the U.S. and Illinois are presented as a platform for understanding the increasing need for educators to better address the linguistic, academic, and socioemotional needs of English language learners and their families. Fundamental principles of second language acquisition and sociocultural paradigms are discussed within the context of language minority populations. Screening and Assessment of Young English Language Learners
NAEYC’s position statement on the screening and assessment of young English language learners recommends that their needs, strengths, and progress should be assessed using methods that are developmentally appropriate, culturally and linguistically responsive, tied to their daily activities, inclusive of families and connected to sound decisions about teaching and learning. Learners (ELLs) Experience some of the highly effective techniques and strategies that are specifically designed for our ELLs in grade school and kindergarten. Structured oral language exercises, research-based literacy activities in L1 and L2, focused reading sessions, differentiated instructional techniques, adaptive first language support will be presented within a framework for organizing culturally and linguistically responsive classrooms.
