  TELLING STORIES

Narratives, written over a period of time, capture children’s evolving awareness, skills and attitudes. They also provide a window into how learning experiences are connected. Using stories to document projects helps adults understand how children construct their own learning by making sense of their experiences.

Malik and the Millipede

A site director recounts how he and a student explored the mystery of a millipede. As the story unfolds, their combined interest takes them from a tiny picture in a magazine to the Internet and, finally, to a hands-on search through the school playground dirt. These photographs, drawings, and dialogues demonstrate that the actual research process can be more important and powerful than the topic for investigation.
