  COLLECTING SAMPLES

Children’s work samples, along with anecdotal and photographic documentation, provide insight into what they are learning, the effectiveness of the learning experience, and the best ways to support individual learning styles. Collections also reveal how curiosity can transform ordinary experiences into extraordinary learning opportunities.

Investigating the Salt Truck

This preschool teacher decides to make the most of her students' fascination with the trucks they observe outside the classroom window. Thoughtful exploration and information-gathering result in the group's construction, using recycled materials, of a three-dimensional "salt truck". At first glance the finished product seems unimpressive, but the photographs, children's words and drawings collected by the teacher reveal what is actually a dynamic learning experience.
